We are in this mess because people did not keep the Lord's prayer. People are told to memorize it never being told what that prayer means. King James Bible, Matthew 6:12
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. We have a debt of death in us that we cannot pay. God will forgive that debt when we forgive the debts that others cannot pay.
